Amputation

Honestly, in my decades of homeopathic practice, amputation cases have been a rare occurrence. I would estimate that I’ve only seen three or four in over 40 years. One memorable case involved a client who had unfortunately lost a finger in a machinery accident, perhaps a saw. They sought a homeopathic remedy to facilitate healing following the amputation. More commonly, I have helped clients experiencing phantom limb pain or discomfort in the residual stump after an amputation.

Homeopathic Remedies for Amputation

No matter the reason for amputation – be it a self-inflicted injury leading to the loss of a finger, hand, or toe, or a medically necessary limb amputation performed by a doctor – the homeopathic remedies used to promote healing and recovery remain consistent. My approach to post-amputation care utilizes the same core homeopathic principles to support your body’s natural healing process, regardless of the specific circumstances that led to the procedure. The homeopathic remedies Arnica Montana 1m and Echinacea 200c will be taken several times a day for the trauma from the amputation and to help boost up the immune system to prevent infection at the amputation site. The homeopathic remedy Bryonia Alba 1m will also be taken several times a day for the pain that is worse from moving the area. Sometimes a client may experience a shooting pain (nerve pain) after amputation. In cases like this I will have my client take the homeopathic remedy Hypericum 30c several times a day when the shooting pain increases.

When the client’s stitches have either been dissolved or removed the homeopathic remedy Calendula 30c will be taken once daily to help heal the skin and the traumatized nerves to prevent phantom pains, which can occur when the nerve endings are still trying to reach out to the severed nerve.

What is Amputation?

Amputation is a surgery to remove all or part of a body part or limb, usually a limb or extremity such as your finger, arm, leg, hand or foot. Common causes for amputation are from poor blood flow, injury, frostbite, infection or health conditions such as diabetes or cancer.

Common Health Conditions that Can Lead to Surgical Amputation:

  • Complications of peripheral artery disease (PAD), from a loss of blood flow
  • Complications of diabetes, which cause nerve damage and loss of sensation
  • Ulcer(s) do not heal and or become infected (i.e., foot and toe) usually related to diabetes or peripheral artery disease
  • Gangrene, tissue death from loss of blood flow, amputated to prevent it spreading
  • Frostbite (stage three) causing irreversible tissue death
  • Life-threatening infections in your bones, joints or other tissues
  • Cancerous tumors that cannot be removed from your body
  • Severe injuries, including severing, crushing and burn injuries

Phantom Pain Case Scenario

A client consults with me about having phantom pains since his hand was crushed in a machine at work eight months ago and had to be amputated. He stated that the doctor told him the phantom pains can sometimes go away over time, start up two years after the amputation, or the intensity of the sensation only decreases. My client went on to tell me his forearm just above where the hand was attached healed up very well with no infection. He said he does have a burning, itching sensation several times a week. He also said he sometimes forgets he doesn’t have his hand and will try to use it. I selected the homeopathic remedy Calendula 30c to be taken once a day for the phantom pains. I also told my client to if the Calendula did not address the burning sensation, he would need to take the homeopathic remedy Hypericum 30c once or twice a day.

My client reported back 10 days later, stating that the burning and itching sensation has decreased overall. I told my client to continue taking Calendula once daily until he no longer has the phantom pains.

What Causes Phantom Pains?

Phantom pains can be a painful sensation that comes from the amputated part (i.e., hand, finger, foot), as if the amputated part is still there, even though it is no longer there. It’s a miscommunication in your nervous system where the severed nerve(s) are trying to reconnect to the other half of the nerve that was cut. You may have aching, burning, itching, numbness, pinching, tingling, stabbing, temperature change, throbbing, or twisting as if the body part is still there. Phantom pains range from mild to severe, which can last for a few seconds, hour(s), or even days. You commonly hear from someone that has an amputated part forget that part of the body is missing and try to use it. For example, they forgot the hand is missing and reach for something on the counter.

Amputation Can Also Cause Mental and Emotional Trauma

Amputation can also cause you to be on a mental and emotional roller coaster from shock that it happened, to anger, fear or despair. There are homeopathic remedies to help you as you go through the healing process. A homeopathic remedy is selected according to how you are feeling emotionally at that time. There are several homeopathic remedies for amputation and phantom pains. The two case scenarios I explained are the common homeopathic remedies used for amputation or phantom pains. However, seeking the counsel of an expert Homeopath can significantly streamline your search and offer personalized guidance and recommendations, helping you to identify the most effective remedies for your specific needs.
