Mommy, David Threw Sand in My Eye!

I vividly recall a day from my children’s early years when they were playing in the backyard sandbox. On that particular day, my son, David, decided to throw sand into the air. As he stood up and tossed the sand, my daughter, Jennifer, looked up in fascination. However, moments later, she came running towards me in distress, tears streaming down her face as she rubbed her eyes. “Mommy, mommy, David threw sand in my eyes!” she exclaimed.

In response, I administered a dose of the homeopathic remedy Aconitum (Aconite) 30c to help soothe her and alleviate her discomfort. This allowed me to carefully flush her eyes with water to ensure her safety and well-being. I chose Aconite for Jennifer because it effectively calms her, allowing me to tilt her head back over the sink without her blinking or turning her head. This positioning enables me to rinse her eyes thoroughly. Additionally, Aconite alleviates the irritation caused by the sand she had rubbed into her eyes. However, if I had not been able to remove all the sand from her eyes, I would have administered the homeopathic remedy Silica 200c. This remedy is known for its ability to assist in expelling foreign matter from the body, making it particularly suitable for addressing any remaining particles in her eyes.

Irritation and Inflammation of the Eye

Irritation of the eye refers to any sensation that bothers your eyes, such as dryness, itchiness, burning, or a gritty feeling. When the eye(s) have been irritated for a period of time, they become inflamed. There are many reasons why you can have eye irritation and/or inflammation in your eye(s), such as dry eye, wind, pollen, dust, or chemicals. I have had clients consult with me for their eyes being sore, irritated from staring at electronics for a long time, which can cause eye strain and or dry out the eyes.

Common Eye Irritation and Inflammation Symptoms

Inflamed and irritated eye symptoms can affect one or both of your eyes:

  • Pain such as dull, sharp, burning, or gritty feeling
  • Red and Itchy eye(s)
  • Dryness of the eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Swelling around the eyes and eyelids
  • Light sensitivity (photophobia)
  • Blurry or cloudy vision

Homeopathic Remedies for Common Causes of Eye Irritation and Inflammation

  • Foreign Objects: A foreign object in the eye, such as a speck of dust, dirt, or sand can cause irritation and discomfort to your eye. In cases like this the most common homeopathic remedy for removing foreign matter from the eye is Silica 200c. I have personally used Silica 200c to remove a contact lens that had gotten stuck under my eyelid, and I had great results after just one dose.
  • Dry Eyes: I am having more and more clients consult with me about their dry eyes from looking at their electronics (screens) for long periods of time, especially at night in a room that does not have proper lighting. I have often recommended Hyland’s Cell Salt #9 (Nat Mur 6x) tablet to help with dry eyes. Nat Mur 6x can also be used for dry eyes in general. There are several other homeopathic remedies that could also help your dry eyes depending upon the symptoms you are exhibiting.
  • Eye Strain: Along with dry eyes from looking at your electronics comes eye strain from the rapid movement of the eyes shifting back and forth while looking at small screens. Extended periods of looking at electronics or engaging in close up work (i.e., needlepoint) for a period of time can lead to eye strain, causing irritation and fatigue. The homeopathic remedy I often recommend for eye strain is Ruta Graveolens 30c taken once a day to help alleviate the strain. Of course, I do suggest avoiding prolonged use of electronics.
  • Irritant in the Eye: Since an irritant in the eye(s) comes from a chemical (i.e., chlorine, cleaner) or like substance (i.e., smoke, cigarette smoke), dust or even a contact lens. A client consulted with me about her contact lenses irritating her eyes. She explained to me that she fell asleep with her contact lenses in her eyes. Since the lenses were in her eyes longer than they should have been, they caused her eyes to become red and irritated. I had her take a couple of doses of the homeopathic remedy Calendula 30c to clear up the irritation.
  • Infections: Eye infections such as pink eye (conjunctivitis) can cause your eye to become inflamed and irritated. See my Blog https://viranginicindy.com/?s=pink for more information on how homeopathy can address pink eye.
  • Eye Injuries: Trauma to the eye, such as from blunt force, scratches, or burns, can cause inflammation and other eye problems. For more information on how homeopathy can address eye injuries See my Blog: https://viranginicindy.com/?s=eye+injuries
  • Blepharitis: Is an inflammation of the eyelids which can lead to irritation, redness, and a feeling of something is in your eye. There are specific homeopathic remedies for Blepharitis that are selected according to your eye symptoms.
  • Medications: There are some medications that can have side effects that include eye inflammation. I suggest you talk to your doctor about the medication(s) you are taking that may be causing eye symptoms. In the meantime, a homeopathic remedy can be taken according to your eye’s symptoms, to help address your inflamed and irritated eye symptoms from your medication(s).

Homeopathic remedies offer a natural and effective approach to alleviating common causes of eye irritation and inflammation, providing relief while minimizing the risk of side effects associated with conventional treatments. To help alleviate your eye irritation and inflammation, it is essential to consult with a professional homeopath to ensure the selection of the most suitable treatments for your specific needs. Prioritizing expert guidance will enhance the potential for relief and promote overall eye health.
