Painful Thumbs resulting from Electronic Device Use?

My client called me about her thumbs hurting her. She correlates the pain in her thumbs with texting. She explained that both of her thumbs feel stiff when she wakes up in the morning and begins to resolve when she moves her thumbs around for couple of minutes. My client told me when she starts texting a lot or scrolling to read her emails and use Facebook, both of her thumbs hurt. The right thumb is especially painful when she moves them. She stated that her right thumb joint sometimes looks a little swollen from time to time. I told her it sounded like she has tendonitis from repetitive motion involving her thumbs while using her electronics (cell phone, iPad, etc.).

After further inquiry, I selected two Homeopathic Remedies:

Arnica Montana 200c and Ruta Graveolens 200c for the repetitive motion strain impacting her thumbs while on her cell phone and iPad.

Then add a couple of pellets of Arnica Montana 200c and Ruta Graveolens 200c to a 1-ounce dropper bottle with filtered water to make up a Remedy Solution Bottle (RSB). I had her succuss (tap) the Remedy Solution Bottle with 10 times before taking each dose 3 times a day. I also had my client add a few pellets of the two Homeopathic Remedies Arnica Montana 200c and Bryonia Alba 200c to another Remedy Solution Bottle (1 ounce dropper bottle) for the pain she has every time she moves her thumbs. I told her she may need to repeat Arnica Montana 200c and Bryonia Alba 200c every 30 minutes for a couple of doses until her thumb pain started to decrease, then repeat one dose a time when the pain intensifies.

Four days later, my client reports noticeable improvement with her thumbs. She said she only needed to take Arnica Montana 200c and Bryonia Alba 200c the first 2 days for the pain that was worse from movement. My client also stated her thumbs are not as stiff, especially in the morning since she has been taking Arnica Montana 200c and Ruta Graveolens 200c three times a day. I advised my client to continue taking Arnica Montana 200c and Ruta Graveolens 200c three times a day until she no longer has the stiffness. I also said she may need to from time to time go back on the Arnica Montana 200c and Ruta Graveolens 200c when she does a lot of texting or scrolling on her electronics on any particular day until the inflammation in the tendons is healed up.

What is Tendonitis?

Tendonitis is the inflammation or irritation of a tendon (thick fibrous cords that attaches your muscles to your bones) that becomes swollen and can be painful. This can occur in your Achilles tendon (tendon that connects your calf muscles to your heel bone), elbows, hips. knees, shoulders, or base of your thumbs from repetitive strain, overuse or injury to that area of the body. You may have Tendonitis from playing sports (i.e., baseball, golfing, running, swimming, or tennis) from the repetitive movement on your joints. You don’t have to play sports to have Tendonitis, you may have it from your occupation or other activities such as gardening, shoveling, painting and what I commonly see today to a great extent occurs from texting. It’s the constant movement of a particular joint that causes you to have Tendonitis symptoms.

Common Tendonitis Symptoms

Your Tendonitis symptoms can come on gradually, or suddenly and you may only have for a short time (Acute) or long term (Chronic) discomfort around your affected joint.

  • The pain (i.e., dull, sharp, radiates) can be worse or better when you move the joint
  • You may have stiffness or tightness when moving your joint
  • Swelling around the joint, possibly with discoloration (red, purple or darker)
  • You may hear or feel a popping or cracking sensation when you move the joint

Other Causes of Tendonitis

Besides having Tendonitis from overuse or repetitive movements you can also develop it from

a side effect of a medication such as Statins or drugs that lower your cholesterol or fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Certain health conditions such as Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Gout, Osteoarthritis or an infection can cause you to have Tendonitis too.

How to Recover from Tennis Elbow Pain

My client consulted with me about her 18-year-old son’s painful right elbow. She stated the doctor diagnosed her son as having Tendonitis of the Elbow (Tennis Elbow) from playing in tennis tournaments the last four weekends. He decided to pull out of this weekend’s tournament, because his coach is concerned that if he continues, he may damage his tendons. She went on telling me her son’s pain is now extending to the muscles above his (triceps) and below (in the forearm) of the elbow. My client said his pain has been so intense during last weekend’s tournament, that he didn’t play as well and lost the match. She told me in between each match and at the end of the day he has been wrapping a heat pack around his elbow which provides very temporary relief because he’s back on the court playing again. Her son has stiffness when he first gets on the court and he only wants to warm up before a match for a few minutes, so not to overdo it with his elbow. My client said there have been times when his elbow is so painful, he does not want to move his elbow.

I selected the two Homeopathic Remedies:

Arnica Montana 1m and Rhus Toxicodendron 1m to be taken in a Homeopathic Remedy Solution Bottle (RSB) with 10 succussions (taps) three times a day. Arnica Montana 1m is selected to address the trauma to the muscles from the overuse and Rhus Toxicodendron 1m for when the muscles are stiff and feels better with heat and continued movement. I told my client to have her son take Arnica Montana 1m and Bryonia Alba 1m when his elbow feels better when he does not move it. I said he may need to take Arnica Montana 1m and Bryonia Alba 1m every hour with 10 succussions until his pain is not as intense when he moves his elbow.

Within five days my client reports her son’s elbow has been slowly improving, and he hasn’t picked up a tennis racket since he started taking the Homeopathic Remedies. She said her son needed to take Arnica Montana 1m and Bryonia Alba 1m 4-5 times a day for the first 2 ½ days. The elbow stiffness is now 30% better and he is just taking Arnica Montana 1m and Rhus Toxicodendron 1m three times a day.

Three days later, my client calls to tell me her son does not seem to be making any progress the last day or so. The stiffness is still better since starting Arnica Montana 1m and Rhus Toxicodendron 1m, but when he stops moving his elbow, it is tightening up and he can’t wait to take his next dose of Arnica Montana 1m and Rhus Toxicodendron 1m two hours later. I told my client to have her son to start succussing the Arnica Montana 1m and Rhus Toxicodendron 1m Remedy Solution Bottle 12 times before taking each dose three times a day.

Four days later, my client called me stating how her son was amazed how just tapping the Arnica Montana 1m and Rhus Toxicodendron 1m two more times made such a difference in his stiffness. He said his elbow is now 75% better, but he is noticing more of the stiffness closer to the elbow. I explained to her, that is what I would expect her son to be eventually feeling, the symptoms closer to the elbow where the tendons attach to the humerus, ulna, and radius bones that make up the elbow joint. Having Tendonitis of the elbow means the tendons that attach the three bones that make up the elbow joint became inflamed from overuse.

However, from the repeated competition he was in the last few weeks the pain started to travel up and below the elbow involving the muscles of his arm. Now that the arm muscles are improving the pain will start to move to the original area (tendons) that became inflamed. I told her when her son only has stiffness in the elbow, we will stop the Arnica Montana 1m and Rhus Toxicodendron 1m Remedy Solution Bottle and have him take the Homeopathic Remedy Ruta Graveolens 200c in a Remedy Solution Bottle with 10 succussion three times a day. The Ruta Graveolens 200c will completely address the Tendonitis of his elbow. However, her son will still have to slowly go back to playing tennis for a shorter duration until he is able to go back to playing on a regular basis. He may need Ruta Graveolens 200c from time to time to continue the healing process as he is able to extend his tennis playing time on the court. I also advise her to suggest to her son, he may want to refrain for playing in any tennis tournaments for several months until he is able to play for that many matches in a weekend or he may be right back to where he was before.

Homeopathic Remedies for Tendonitis

You will select a 30c or 200c Homeopathic Remedy according to the pain sensations (i.e., sharp, dull, radiation, etc.), you are experiencing along with what makes them feel better or worse. Such as your pain feels better or worse with movement, applying heat or cold on the joint. You will take the selected Homeopathic Remedy several times a day, repeating the Remedy(s) when the improved symptom(s) becomes worse (intensify) again:

  • Arnica Montana – Selected in a 200c or in severe cases a 1m potency to address the inflammation in the joint.
  • Bryonia Alba – Selected for when your Tendonitis pain feels better when you do not move the joint.
  • Rhus Toxicodendron –You will select when your Tendonitis is affecting the muscle(s) further out from the joint. Your pain, stiffness or tightness feels better once you start to move the muscle and apply heat to the area.
  • Ruta Graveolens – You will select when your Tendonitis is only in the joint of the affected area. Your pain, stiffness or tightness feels better once you start to move the joint and apply heat to the area.
  • Rhododendron Is selected when your Tendonitis is worse before a storm or when at rest. The Tendonitis symptoms are gone when the storm breaks and from applying heat to the area.
  • Causticum Is when your tendons are pulled tight causing a contraction of the tendons (trigger finger/thumb) and deformities on joints (Rheumatoid Arthritis).

As you can see from the two actual case scenarios I shared with you, Tendonitis can be completely addressed with Homeopathy without needing to take Allopathic Medication. Even though a Homeopathic Remedy is selected according to Tendonitis symptoms (pain) you are experiencing, your Tendonitis is addressed because a Homeopathic Remedy addresses why you have the Tendonitis; not to just take the pain away.
