In today’s world, where modern medicine is often in the spotlight, the ancient practice of Homeopathy still provides gentle and natural options for treating various health issues. One area where Homeopathic Remedies have been effective is in addressing neck injuries. These injuries can vary from mild strains to more serious problems, leading to pain and restricted movement. This article will explore Homeopathic Remedies specifically designed for neck injuries, sharing a personal experience that involved my son.
Have You Ever had a Neck Injury like My Son Did?
My son injured his neck a few years ago in the ocean, while we were on a family vacation in the Outer Banks in North Carolina. He was swimming and proceeded to ride the wave in, when he bumped his head into my daughter who suddenly moved in front of him. He hit my daughter’s leg very hard with his head and literally jammed his head into his neck. He thought nothing of it, until later the evening, when he told me his neck hurts when he moves his head (worse from movement). He said his pain number when he moved his neck was a #7. I had him take two Homeopathic Remedies Arnica Montana 1m and Bryonia Alba 1m in a Remedy Solution Bottle (RSB) with 10 succussions (taps). My son repeated Arnica and Bryona every couple of hours when the neck symptoms started to become more intense again when he moved his head and neck.
The following day, my son told me that his neck was feeling significantly better yesterday compared to how it feels today. He stated he was taking Arnica and Bryonia every four hours when his neck pain intensified. He said last night his pain number was #5; as the pain number started out as a #7. Today he said he has to repeat Arnica and Bryonia every three hours and the pain number keeps fluctuating from a #5 to a #6. I had in increased his succussions (taps) from 10 to 12 succussions and stated he will be able to go longer between doses (i.e. every four hours) and his pain number will start to lower to a #4 or a lesser pain number, after taking the Homeopathic Remedies.
Two days later, my son told me he is starting to have stiffness in his neck especially when he wakes up in the morning. He stated the stiffness improves after taking a shower and from massaging it. I told him starting to have stiffness in the neck is a good sign that he is back to what originally happened when he jammed his head into his neck in the ocean. He also stated he only needs Arnica and Bryonia two times a day when he has over done it with moving his head up and down too much. I had him continue taking Arnica and Bryonia two times a day until he know longer has the neck symptoms worse from movement from over doing it with his neck. I also had him start taking Arnica Montana 1m and Rhus Toxicodendron 1m in another Remedy Solution Bottle three times day with 10 succussions for the stiffness he is now experiencing.
A couple of days later my son told me he no longer needed the Arnica and Bryonia for his neck, since he has been taking Arnica and Rhus Toxicodendron three times a day. I explained to him that the pain he experienced that was worse from movement was from him over doing it when he moved his neck. What happens is he was moving his neck too much for his head being jammed into his neck. When you move the head and the neck it exasperates the neck symptoms, causing him to have pain when he moves his head and or neck; making the symptoms to be more acute. As his neck was improving with the Arnica and Bryonia, his neck symptoms worse from movement improved taking his neck symptoms back to the original symptoms when he jammed his head into his neck. That is where the Arnica and Rhus Toxicodendron come in for his head being jammed (wrenched) into his neck. I told him to continue taking Arnica and Rhus Toxicodendron until his neck stiffness has completely improved.
What Causes Neck Injuries and the Symptoms You Commonly Experience
Neck injuries can come from various reasons: neck sprain, whiplash (car accident, physical abuse), a fall, sports related injury, or job related with repetitive movement of your neck or overhead work.
Some neck injuries come from a head injury (concussion). If that is the case, you will need to address your head injury with a Homeopathic Remedy to help your neck symptoms.
Common Neck Injury Symptoms:
- Stiff or tight neck
- Pain – such as a burning, numbness, tingling or a shooting pain (nerve pain)
- Headaches
- Muscle spasms in neck and or shoulders
- Weakness in your leg(s), arm(s), hand(s) and or finger(s)
- Dizziness
What to Look for When Selecting a Homeopathic Remedy for Your Neck Injury:
- You want to make a note of the sensation you are feeling in your neck (i.e., burning, dull, sharp, stiffness, tightness, numbness and or tingling)
- Does the neck pain move? Such as radiates up to the head, down the arm
- What makes your neck symptoms feel better or worse, without taking a supplement, medications, essential oil, etc.? Do your neck symptoms feel better or worse when you apply heat or cold application? Does moving your neck or keeping it still make your symptoms better or worse?
Administering Your Selected Homeopathic Neck Injury Remedy
Once you know your neck injury symptoms, you will select a 30c, 200c or in some cases a 1m potency of a Homeopathic Remedy. You will administer your selected Homeopathic Remedy several times a day when your neck symptoms start to intensify. I suggest you use a “Pain Scale” to help in knowing when you will need to repeat your next dose of your Homeopathic Neck Remedy. I have my “Pain Scale” go from #1 (less intense pain) to #10 (very intense pain). The “Pain Scale” also helps to see the progress you are making with your neck symptoms. You will be able to see a pattern such as, every few days of your overall pain number decreasing.
Common Homeopathic Neck Injury Remedies:
- Arnica Montana – Is selected for neck injury pain, swelling and inflammation from trauma from the injury. I like to think of Arnica as a natural way to address inflammation, instead of taking an anti-inflammatory medication – NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
- Bryonia Alba – Is selected for neck pain that is worse from movement and better when applying pressure to your neck. In other words, your neck feels better when you do not move your neck or head.
- Hypericum – Is for nerve pain anywhere in the body (i.e., back of neck from whiplash, especially from a head injury. The pain is sharp and shooting (radiating) out from the point of origin (i.e., from your neck down the arm).
- Rhus Toxicodendron – Is selected for neck injuries with pain and or stiffness from overextension of the neck or being wrenched such as from lifting objects. The symptoms decrease with continued movement, applying hot applications or rubbing the neck. The symptoms are worse from damp weather. In other words, your neck feels better when you loosen up your neck when you first start to move your neck or head. Also feels better when you massage or applying heat to your neck.
- Ruta Graveolens – Ruta has the same symptoms as Rhus Toxicodendron, better from movement, massage and applying heat. The only difference is the tightness and stiffness are more localized to the bones. This is where the muscles and or tendons attach to the bone, in this case the cervical bones in your neck.
- Magnesia Phosphorica – As a Homeopathic Remedy or Cell Salt (also called a Tissue) helps all aches, pains and spasms that occur in the body, especially where there is trauma such as in the neck. When you have pain in your body, it decreases your magnesium levels in your body. When you have low magnesium levels in your body, you will experience aches pains, spasms and muscle cramps (Charlie horses). You can take Magnesia Phosphorica as a Homeopathic Remedy (i.e., 30c potency) or as a #8 Mag Phos Cell Salt 6x tablets to help increase your magnesium levels and help you to decrease your neck pain.
Homeopathic Remedies function differently than conventional medications. While medications often focus solely on relieving symptoms like pain, Homeopathic Remedies aim to understand the underlying causes of those symptoms, such as neck pain. By addressing the root issues, the neck pain can improve and eventually disappear.
