When you select a homeopathic remedy for acute symptoms (i.e., sore throat, cold, PMS, menstrual cramps, swollen glands), you only want to use symptoms (characteristics) that are new symptoms associated with your acute health condition. You do not want to use your typical characteristics (i.e., drinks hot or cold, warm body type).

For example, the symptom “always thirsty for cold drinks.” Since thirst for cold drinks is not a new characteristic or symptom for you, you would not consider thirsty for cold drinks when selecting it for a homeopathic remedy for an acute health condition (i.e., sore throat or swollen glands).

Another example would be if your body temperature is always warm, and now that you don’t feel well, you are chilly. You will use the symptom “feeling chilly” to help you select a homeopathic remedy. One of the homeopathic remedies to consider when you feel chilly since not feeling well is Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum for an acute health condition.

Case Scenario #1: My mom always drank one to two cups of coffee each day. She did not want any coffee when she had terrible menstrual cramps; because it tasted bitter. Because it was not like my mom not to have her coffee, it was a key symptom in finding a homeopathic remedy for her menstrual cramps. She needed the homeopathic remedy Colocynthis for her menstrual cramps because she “disliked the taste of coffee.”

Case Scenario #2: You developed a sore throat, and your sore throat feels better with hot drinks, which is unusual for you since you always drink cold drinks. Rhus Toxicodendron and Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum are two homeopathic remedies for sore throats better with hot drinks.

Case Scenario #3: You like cold drinks, but now you are very thirsty for cold drinks (can’t get enough cold drinks). When looking for a homeopathic remedy, you would use the symptom “very thirsty for cold drinks.” Phosphorus is one of the homeopathic remedies selected for the symptoms “very thirsty for cold drinks.”

The Bottom Line: You only want to use the new symptoms when selecting a homeopathic remedy for your acute symptoms.
