Ingrown Toenails

Have You Taken the Homeopathic Remedy Nitricum Acidum for Your Ingrown Toenail?

My client consults with me about her ingrown toenail pressing into the side of her big toe. She stated that she has had an ingrown toenail on her right toe for the last couple of years. She said she usually just has to soak the toe in a warm water Epson Salt solution and then be able to cut the nail at an angle to remove the part of the nail that is growing into the side of her right toe. My client went on to tell me that for the last three days, she has been standing most of the day in dress shoes for a work event. Her ingrown toenail is so painful, red, and swollen from all the standing in the narrow-toed dress shoes. She stated the Epson Salt water solution she has been soaking her toe in is not helping with the pain and inflammation. My client described the pain in her toe as a sharp needle poking into the skin of the outer side of her big toe.

After asking a few more questions, I selected the Homeopathic Remedy Nitricum Acidum 30c to be taken in a Homeopathic Remedy Solution Bottle (RSB) with 10 succussions (taps) every night at bedtime. My client called back three days later, stating the needle-like pain was almost gone, along with the redness and swelling. I had my client continue taking Nitricum Acidum 30c with 10 succussions every night until the pain was gone entirely.

What is an Ingrown Toenail?

Ingrown toenails, also known as Onychocryptosis, are when your toenails, usually on your big toe, grow into skin at the corner of the toe and cause pain when standing or walking. The nail irritates the skin around your toe, which often creates pain, redness, and swelling, and the toe becomes warm (inflamed), especially when pressure is placed on it. Sometimes, the toe becomes so inflamed it will bleed, ooze liquid or pus, and emit a foul odor from becoming infected.

Ingrown toenails affect your toes on either foot, especially your big toe, causing pain and making it hard to stand or walk. Although uncommon, it is possible to have an ingrown fingernail as well.

How Do You Develop an Ingrown Toenail?

An ingrown toenail affects both men and women and is especially seen in teenagers when they have any of the following conditions:

  • When you trim your toenails too short or not straight across, your nails may grow into the skin of your toe
  • When you have very curved toenails
  • Often wear shoes that are too tight or too short
  • When you tear the corner of the nail (toe or finger)
  • Trauma to your toe, stubbing your toe, having your toe stepped on, dropping something heavy on your toe, running or repeatedly kicking an object (i.e., ball), or putting pressure on your feet for long periods: Ballet, football, kickboxing, running or from playing soccer.

Homeopathic Remedies for Ingrown Nails (Toe and Finger)

You will select a 30c Homeopathic Remedy according to the symptoms you are experiencing and administer once a day (at bedtime). As your ingrown nail (toe and finger) starts to heal with the selected Homeopathic Remedy, the pain, swelling, and soreness around the skin surrounding your nail will also improve. The discharge of pus will go away, too.

Commonly Used Homeopathic Remedies Selected for Ingrown Toenails:

  • Graphites – Selected for an ingrown toenail with a thick nail, which is rough and deformed. The nail (toe or finger) is painful; the tissue around the nail is swollen and is starting to ulcerate, creating a sticky discharge.
  • Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum – This remedy is selected for when the ingrown toenail develops into an infection (abscess), with thick yellow offensive-smelling pus. The infected toenail is very sensitive to slighted touch and pressure.
  • Hypericum – This is selected for an ingrown toenail caused by stubbing or dropping something on the toe, causing shooting pain.
  • Magnetis Polus Australis – This remedy is for an ingrown toenail with extreme pulsating or sharp pain when walking.
  • Nitricum Acidum – You will select this remedy for an ingrown toenail with splinter-like pain under the nail or into the skin around the nail.
  • Silicea – This is selected for an ingrown toenail that is ulcerated and discharging offensive-smelling pus that is slow in healing.
  • Teucrium Marum Verum – Selected for an ingrown toenail infected with pus and nail, causing pain as if the nail has grown into the flesh of the toe.

Do You Need to Have an Ingrown Toenail Surgery?

In most cases, an ingrown toenail heals without surgery, especially when you take a Homeopathic Remedy for the symptoms. When you have waited too long to address your ingrown nail (in severe cases), you may need to surgically remove part of the nail. In some cases, you may have to have your toenail permanently removed.

Sometimes, Ingrown Toenail Surgery is Necessary

My client consulted with me about the pain of her 15-year-old daughter’s ingrown toenail surgery she had yesterday. She told me her daughter is a high school soccer player and has been having intense pain in her left big toe. My client stated that her daughter plays soccer on the traveling team in the Spring and Summer and now for the Fall Season for her high school team. She has been kicking the soccer ball non-stop, which has aggravated her ingrown toenail. In the past, when her ingrown toenail started to hurt, her dad would cut the side of the nail to relieve the pain. The doctor said she needed to have the ingrown toenail surgery because her toe was so painful that she didn’t want anyone to touch her toe, and now it’s infected and starting to ooze pus.

My client said today that now that the painkiller has worn off from the procedure, her daughter has intense pain when she moves her foot, and she wants to take Homeopathic Remedies, not painkillers. She went on to tell me that the pain was worse from moving her foot. After asking my client some questions, I selected three Homeopathic Remedies: Arnica Montana, Echinacea, Bryonia Alba, and Belladonna for the pain.

I started with Arnica 1m and Echinacea 200c in a Remedy Solution Bottle and Bryonia Alba 1m in another Remedy Solution Bottle (RSB). I had her take both Remedy Solution Bottles every hour with 10 succussions (taps) until the pain started to decrease. I instructed her to repeat the Arnica, Echinacea, and Bryonia Remedy Solution Bottles when the pain intensity increased after backing off. I said that in most cases, she will take Arnica, Echinacea, and Bryonia every 2-3 hours when the pain intensity increases. I also suggested the Homeopathic Remedy Belladonna 200c as dry pellets when she has throbbing pain, which usually can come on at night.

The next day, my client called me to let me know that her daughter did well with the Arnica and Echinacea and Bryonia Remedy Solution Bottles for the pain worse from the movement. She stated that she only needed two doses of the Belladonna last night for the throbbing pain. My client’s daughter continued taking Arnica and Echinacea and the Bryonia Remedy Solution Bottles several times a day for the pain. When the pain worse from the movement was not decreasing, I had her increase the succussions on the 2 Homeopathic Remedy Solution Bottles from 10 to 12. My client’s daughter reported that increasing the succussions on the Arnica and Echinacea and the Bryonia water bottles made a huge difference in her pain intensity.

Ingrown toenail surgery can help you get rid of the problem; however, there is a chance the ingrown toenail may reoccur. After taking Homeopathic Remedies for the pain from the ingrown toenail procedure, you want to select a Homeopathic Remedy for the ingrown toenail symptoms to address the reoccurrence of the ingrown toenail.
